Arizona’s Department of Forestry and Fire Management needs a Fire Engine Captain for its Flagstaff district. The captain directs a wildland engine and its crew on daily project work, wildfire response and all-risk incidents, operating engines, utility trucks, portable pumps, radios, chainsaws, chippers and ATVs. Between calls the captain assigns and checks crew project work, sets performance expectations, evaluates crew members, leads and monitors physical training, and enforces safety rules on and off the fireline. Preventive maintenance is a core duty: supervising apparatus and equipment checks, hose and saw condition, engine inventory and keeping the bay orderly. The captain also helps the assistant fire management officer deliver district fire training. NWCG Engine Boss qualification and arduous fitness under PMS 310-1 must be reached within a year of hire.
