You need to ride well, but not always to have been paid for it. Sundance Trail Guest Ranch asks for proficient riding, basic equine first aid, and CPR and first aid or a willingness to get them. Triangle X trains wranglers for their duties. The Certified Horsemanship Association’s Seasonal Equestrian Staff certification is built for entry-level riding staff at guest ranches and camps.

Usually 18, and sometimes 21. C Lazy U Ranch requires applicants to be at least 18. Triangle X Ranch requires wranglers to be 21 because of the insurance on its company vehicles. The Certified Horsemanship Association’s Assistant Day Ride Trail Guide certification starts at 16 and the full Day Ride Trail Guide level at 18.

Cash pay is modest because room and board come with the job. Swan Mountain Outfitters starts wranglers at $1,200 a month plus tips, with room and board, for 12-hour days five to six days a week. Sundance Trail Guest Ranch pays $15 an hour plus tips with housing and meals, and Triangle X pays a monthly salary with free room and board.

Horses first, then guests. Triangle X wranglers care for more than 100 horses, bring them in and out of pasture, and saddle more than 75 each morning before leading rides. Swan Mountain wranglers check guests in, teach basic horsemanship, lead rides of 1 to 8 hours at a walk, and help with trail and facility maintenance.

First aid and CPR, then a horsemanship credential. Swan Mountain prefers current CPR and Wilderness First Aid. The Certified Horsemanship Association certifies trail guides and seasonal riding staff; certification is valid three years with annual CHA membership, and you recertify with at least 25 hours of continuing education. Host facilities may charge $800 to $1,000 for a five-day certification.
