Get hired by a licensed Idaho outfitter, then apply to the Outfitters and Guides Licensing Board with a current American Red Cross first aid card or a comparable certification the board accepts. For each classified whitewater river, you need three complete float trips on that river under a licensed outfitter or guide. If you already have six or more documented trips on another classified section, one supervised trip on the new section qualifies you. The license is $105, plus a $20 first-time application fee.

Besides first aid certification, Idaho’s board rules require hunting guide applicants to show at least 10 days of experience in the outfitter’s operating area, with knowledge of trails, terrain, drainages and game habits. You must be able to use a map and compass or GPS, and have training in caring for meat and trophies, including caping an animal correctly. Idaho Fish and Game’s 2026 deer, elk and pronghorn seasons run from August 2026 to February 2027.

The Idaho Department of Lands hires seasonal firefighters, and with its partners it is responsible for fire suppression and prevention on more than 9 million acres of state, private and federal land. Entry Firefighter II jobs require no previous fire experience. You must be 18, pass the Work Capacity Fitness Test at the arduous level, handle up to 16 hours of outdoor work a day, and in some locations work in isolated areas for 14 to 21 days at a time.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon’s lottery control season runs May 28 to September 3, and a Forest Service permit is required to float it year-round, from Dagger Falls to the confluence with the Main Salmon. No more than seven float boat parties, commercial and non-commercial combined, may launch per day, and commercial outfitters are allocated launches on the Middle Fork and Main Salmon. Guide jobs on those rivers come through the outfitters that hold them.
