TL;DR
- Ski resort housing is shared and you pay for it. Posted rates run from $125 a week at Killington and $140 at Loon and Sunday River to $154–$231 a paycheck at Sun Valley and $220.08 every two weeks at Copper Mountain.
- Most resorts house full-time staff only: an average of 30+ hours a week at Sun Valley, 32+ at Grand Targhee. Expect $150 to $400 in deposits and fees before you move in.
- Vail Resorts’ winter 2026/2027 postings take applications until December 15 or until filled, mostly from $20 an hour. Some jobs elsewhere, including Alta’s snowmaking and snowcat crews, had stopped taking applications by October 26, 2026.
- Arizona guest ranches run from October to early May with a room and meals. Colorado’s C Lazy U Ranch starts hiring for the holidays in November.
A winter job with housing solves the hardest part of a mountain season: finding a bed. Keystone tells new hires that rooms in town run $600 to $1,000 per person a month. Ski areas, winter guest ranches and working ranches all house some of their crew, on very different terms.
Below are the winter jobs that come with housing, what resorts charge for 2026–27, and what is still open in late October and November. Every figure comes from the employer’s own page, listed under Sources.
Which winter jobs come with housing?
Full-time resort jobs come with housing most often, but it is decided posting by posting. In Vail Resorts’ 2026/2027 listings, Okemo snowmakers and Vail ski instructors have housing. Northstar rental technicians do not.
| Job | Typical start | Housing, per 2026–27 postings | What the sources say about pay and cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snowmaking | October; Alta’s job runs October through December | Yes at Okemo and Wildcat; not with Alta’s snowmaking job | Okemo $20.00–$23.00/hr; Wildcat lead snowmaker $20.00–$30.61/hr; rent at the resort’s housing rate |
| Snowcat and grooming | Opening; Alta’s shifts are 4:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. or 12:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. | “May be available” at Alta | Not stated |
| Lift operations | Opening day: November 20 at Alta and Grand Targhee, November 25 at Big Sky | Follows each resort’s full-time rule | Resort housing rates below |
| Ski and snowboard school | Mid-November; Alta apprentices commit to mid-April | Yes for Vail certified and Hunter non-certified instructors; not for Aspen Snowmass pros; Alta apprentices may be eligible | Vail $21.00–$64.34/hr; Hunter $20.00/hr |
| Rental shop | Opening | No for Northstar’s ski school rental technician | $20/hr |
| Food and beverage | Late November; Alta’s Alf’s Restaurant runs to late April | Yes for Stevens Pass cooks; dorm-style at Alf’s for full-time staff, none for part-time | Stevens Pass $21.25–$26.57/hr; Sun Valley’s employee dining room averages $3.75 a meal |
| Housekeeping | Opening, or year-round | Yes for Keystone housekeepers (year-round) | Keystone $20.00–$22.92/hr |
| Guest ranch crew | Early to mid-October in Arizona; mid-December at C Lazy U | Private room and three meals at Elkhorn Ranch; housing and meals at Circle Z | Elkhorn values room and board at about $5 an hour |
| Ranch feeding, calving, caretaking | Through winter | Varies by ranch; the house is often part of the pay | See the ranch section below |

Read the housing line on every posting, even at one resort. Vail Resorts’ postings carry a “Housing Availability” field marked Yes or No. Alta’s postings say whether housing comes with each job, and its snowmaking job says plainly that it does not.
Ski school is the biggest split. Aspen Snowmass says employee housing is not available for ski and snowboard pros and goes to hourly support staff first, while Vail’s certified instructor posting lists housing.
How does ski resort employee housing work?
You accept a job, apply for a bed, pay a deposit and rent up front, and share a room. At Copper Mountain that means $420 at move-in for a double room that then costs $220.08 every two weeks.
| Resort | Posted rate | About per two weeks (our math) | Deposit and fees | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavenly, CA (Vail Resorts) | $13.08/day per person | $183 | $350 security deposit | 18+, offer in hand, 3-month commitment |
| Keystone and Breckenridge, CO (Vail Resorts) | Not published | n/a | $250 refundable deposit, $50 application fee | 18+, offer in hand, 3-month commitment |
| Big Sky, MT (Boyne) | $14.50–$25.75/day for dorms | $203–$361 | Not published | Subject to availability |
| Loon, NH and Sunday River, ME (Boyne) | $140/week, utilities included | $280 | $250 security deposit | Subject to availability |
| Boyne Mountain, MI | $350/month ($80.77/week) | $162 | Not published | Subject to availability |
| Copper Mountain, CO | $15.72/night; $220.08 biweekly | $220 | $150 deposit, $50 admin fee, $220 advance rent | Full-time, 18+, background check; roommate required |
| Sun Valley, ID | $154–$231 per paycheck | $154–$231 (biweekly pay) | $400, taken from your first 3 paychecks | Full-time, averaging 30+ hours a week |
| Grand Targhee, WY | From $225 to $325 biweekly, utilities and Wi-Fi included | $225–$325 | $200 deposit, $50 application fee | Full-time, 32+ hours a week |
| Killington, VT | $125/week | $250 | $300 deposit plus two weeks’ rent, $550 at move-in | Full-time, 18+, accepted offer |
| Taos Ski Valley, NM | From $500/month shared to $2,000 for a single-family unit | From about $231 | $100 reservation fee, $325 deposit | Employees, first come, first served |
Rates are the employers’ current housing pages, accessed Oct 26, 2026; most say prices can change. The two-week column is our conversion: daily rates times 14, weekly times 2, monthly times 12 divided by 26.
Rent usually comes out of your check or is paid in advance. Sun Valley lists rent per paycheck and takes its $400 deposit from your first three checks. Copper and Killington want payment in full at move-in, and say failing to pay can stop you moving in.
Rooms are shared. Most Sun Valley rooms are set up for four roommates, Heavenly and Keystone put two or three people in a bedroom, and Copper requires a roommate for every resident. Sun Valley’s Cedar building is for couples only, at $231 a paycheck.
The rules that catch people:
- Full-time only. Copper, Killington, Sun Valley and Grand Targhee all limit housing to full-time staff. Alta offers none for part-time restaurant jobs.
- Limited beds. Beaver Creek offers housing to full-time winter employees “on a limited basis” and says it fills rapidly. Aspen Snowmass has a waitlist but says not to count on it.
- Fixed terms. Aspen Snowmass leases typically run 5.5 months. Killington residents agree to leave when the seasonal job ends.
- Age. Heavenly, Keystone and Breckenridge require residents to be 18, and residents aged 18 to 21 sign a non-drinking agreement.
- No resort housing at all. Vail Resorts’ Crested Butte page says it does not offer employee housing and points to local rentals.
Your employer is the resort, even on public land. The White River National Forest alone permits eleven ski resorts, including Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain, but the resort hires you and runs the housing. For a wider look at employer housing, see seasonal outdoor jobs with housing.
Can you still get a winter job with housing in November 2026?
Yes, but fewer jobs are open. Vail Resorts’ 2026/2027 postings take applications until December 15 or until filled, and Big Sky, Taos and Killington were still recruiting for winter on October 26, 2026.
Winter hiring starts in summer. Copper opened winter housing applications on August 1, Sun Valley posts H-2B winter jobs on July 1, and the National Park Service takes winter applications in July and August. Late October is the tail end, so expect some postings to be gone.
| Employer | Status on Oct 26, 2026 | Key dates |
|---|---|---|
| Vail Resorts (Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Okemo, Stevens Pass and others) | Rolling hiring; some postings already filled, such as a Park City prep cook | Applications close December 15 or when filled |
| Big Sky Resort, MT | Hiring for winter, “apply now” | Opens November 25 |
| Taos Ski Valley, NM | Hiring for winter 27 from $18.50/hr | H-2B season November 20, 2026 to April 11, 2027 |
| Killington, VT | Winter housing applications open for full-time staff | Season generally early November to mid-May; most seasonal jobs end early April |
| Grand Targhee, WY | Housing limited, by department | Opens November 20 |
| Aspen Snowmass, CO | Pay from $21/hr | Arrive by December 2, 2026; season November 26, 2026 to April 18, 2027 |
| Alta Ski Area, UT | Snowmaking, snowcat, Alf’s Restaurant and ski school apprentice postings closed | Opens November 20 |
| C Lazy U Ranch, CO | Holiday hiring begins in November | Winter mid-December through spring break; preference if you can stay through April |
| Elkhorn Ranch, AZ | Asked applicants to apply by August 1 | Season early October 2026 to early May 2027 |

To get hired this late, make it easy to say yes:
- Apply to full-time jobs, since part-timers rarely qualify for a bed.
- Apply for the housing the day you accept. Sun Valley assigns beds first come, first served.
- Offer the whole season. Sun Valley usually asks for December through April, and C Lazy U prefers winter staff who stay through April.
- Take the job the resort needs filled. Hunter’s non-certified ski instructor posting pays from $20 an hour and lists housing.
Open listings are at jobs with housing and lodge staff jobs. For the full-year picture, see the outdoor job hiring calendar.
Can you work a winter season in a national park?
Yes, though the 2026–27 federal window has closed. The National Park Service takes applications for winter positions in July and August, and posts its seasonal jobs on USAJOBS.
Yellowstone is the biggest winter park operation. Its groomed roads open to snowmobiles and snowcoaches on December 15, 2026, and close between March 7 and March 15, 2027, by segment. Only the road from the North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance stays open year-round.
In-park winter lodging runs on the same calendar. The park lists Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel open in winter through March 7, 2027, and Old Faithful Snow Lodge lodging from December 16 to March 5.
Hotel and dining jobs in parks belong to private concessioners, not the Park Service. How they hire and house staff is in national park lodge jobs.
What winter ranch jobs come with housing?
Winter guest ranch crews, feeding and calving hands, and caretakers. Arizona guest ranches house and feed their crews from October to early May, and working ranches need help through the winter feeding season.
Winter guest ranches. Elkhorn Ranch near Tucson gives each crew member a private furnished room with linens, a bathroom shared with 1 or 2 others, and three meals a day. Its crew works from early October 2026 to early May 2027.
Circle Z Ranch in Arizona runs its staff season from mid-October to early May with housing and meals, and hires cooks and servers. Kay El Bar in Wickenburg posted an administration and housekeeping job for an October start at $18 an hour plus tips, with housing available and meals included.
In Colorado, C Lazy U Ranch near Granby runs its winter season from mid-December through spring break. It provides meals, offers housing “below market rate,” and hires for the holidays from November. More on guest ranch work is in dude ranch jobs.
Feeding. Winter on a cow-calf ranch means hay and water every day. Montana State University Extension beef specialist Megan Van Emon says cows could be fed 60 to 90 days, depending on weather and calving season.
Her planning figure is about 2 bales of 1,400 pounds per cow for a 3-month feeding period. On a big herd, that is daily work through the coldest months.
Calving. Calving help is hired ahead of the season and often works nights, so living on the ranch matters. When to apply, what the work is and what it pays are in calving season ranch jobs.
Caretaking. A winter caretaker keeps a lodge or ranch running while the owners are away, and the house is usually part of the pay. Pay, couples jobs and tax rules are in ranch caretaker jobs.
What should you check before you accept winter housing?
Get the rent, the deposit, the roommates and the move-in and move-out dates in writing before you travel. The full list of offer terms is in the seasonal job offer checklist; these points are specific to winter.
- Move-in date. Sun Valley lets you move in no more than 3 days before your start date. Book travel to match.
- Hours. Ask whether your schedule keeps you at the full-time line. Vail’s instructor posting says a 40-hour week is not guaranteed.
- What you bring. Heavenly, Keystone and Breckenridge residents supply their own bed linens, towels and cleaning supplies. Killington sells an optional $35 linen package.
- Kitchen. Sun Valley’s Aspen and Alpine buildings share communal kitchens. Some ranches, like Elkhorn, feed you three meals a day.
- Pets. Copper, Killington and Beaver Creek housing is not pet friendly, and Grand Targhee says pet-friendly housing is extremely limited.
- Getting around. Killington staff ride a free bus with a staff ID. Grand Targhee gives residents free parking.
- The end of the season. Ask when you must move out and what happens to the housing if the job ends early.
Then do the math. A bed at $220 every two weeks still comes out of your pay. Compare offers by what you keep after housing, as the checklist shows.
Frequently asked questions
Is ski resort employee housing free?
Not at the resorts in this article. Posted rates run from $80.77 a week at Boyne Mountain to $154–$231 a paycheck at Sun Valley, plus deposits of $150 to $400. Arizona guest ranches such as Elkhorn and Circle Z include room and meals as part of the job.
Can part-time winter staff get resort housing?
Rarely. Copper and Killington accept housing applications only from full-time employees, Sun Valley requires an average of 30+ hours a week, and Grand Targhee 32+. Alta’s part-time restaurant jobs come without housing.
Do ski instructors get employee housing?
It depends on the resort. Vail’s certified instructor and Hunter’s non-certified instructor postings for 2026/2027 list housing. Aspen Snowmass says housing is not available for ski and snowboard pros, and Alta’s full-time apprentices may be eligible for limited housing in Sandy or Cottonwood Heights.
Can couples live together in resort housing?
Sometimes. Sun Valley has a couples-only building, Cedar, at $231 a paycheck. Most resort housing is shared rooms assigned by availability, so ask before you both accept.
Can I work a ski season at 18?
Yes. Copper, Killington, Heavenly, Keystone and Breckenridge house employees from age 18, and at the three Vail Resorts properties residents aged 18 to 21 sign a non-drinking agreement. Hunter’s instructor posting hires from 16, so ask about the housing age if you are under 18.
