When Outdoor Jobs Hire: A Month-by-Month Calendar

Most outdoor jobs are filled months before the work starts. A Forest Service fire hire who reports in March 2027 is selected in November and December 2026. Colorado guest ranches that open in May do most of their hiring December through March. Bristol Bay processors open applications in January for a season that starts in mid-June. Start looking when the weather turns and you are applying for what is left.

The dates below are the ones employers and agencies published for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, or a recurring pattern where the source states one.

What outdoor jobs are hiring each month?

Fall is for federal jobs, winter is for ranches, lodges and Alaska, spring is for guide schools, and summer is for hunting camps and winter jobs.

When do wildland firefighter jobs open?

In late summer and fall, for a season that starts the next spring. The National Interagency Fire Center says the typical fire season runs May to September or October and that you should apply several months ahead, typically November through early January, because the hiring process is lengthy. Forest Service and U.S. Wildland Fire Service (Interior) jobs are all posted on USAJOBS (NIFC, accessed Sep 13, 2026).

For the 2027 season, the Forest Service ran its permanent fire hire from August 24 to September 22, 2026. On the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, certificates go to hiring managers October 27, selections run November 2 to December 11, 2026, and the first new hires start in March 2027. The Lolo National Forest schedules background checks and drug testing from December 2026 through March 2027 (forest pages, updated August 2026).

Temporary jobs come in phases with short windows. A GW-3 Wildland Firefighter announcement was open only July 31 to August 14, 2026, for start dates of January 10 to April 4, 2027, at $21.14 an hour (USAJOBS). The Southwestern Region says the next temporary phase opens October 30, 2026, and that applications typically open four to eight months before the start date. When do Alaska fishing and processing jobs hire?

In winter and spring, for a salmon season that runs from mid-June through July. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s 2026 outlook, released March 23, 2026, says the Bristol Bay commercial salmon season opens June 1 by regulation and forecasts an inshore run of about 44.1 million sockeye. In the Naknek-Kvichak District, fishing was scheduled on a fixed weekly calendar from June 1 to June 24, 2026, then set by run strength until July 17. The department’s Dillingham office opens seven days a week from June 17 to July 17, and Nushagak District managers switch to coho around July 23.

Processors hire ahead of that run. Leader Creek Fisheries in Naknek hires more than 500 people a season, runs from mid-June to late July or early August, provides room and board and round-trip airfare, and expects to open 2027 applications in January. Alaska General Seafoods hires more than 900 seasonal workers between Naknek, mid-June to late July, and Ketchikan, late June to early September. It provides room and board at no cost and covers airfare from your closest metropolitan airport to Alaska, and back on successful completion of the season (company employment pages, accessed Sep 13, 2026).

When do raft guide and fishing guide jobs fill?

Raft companies hire through spring guide schools; fishing lodges fill a season ahead. The Nantahala Outdoor Center in North Carolina starts taking 2027 raft guide applications in late September 2026. After an interview and an offer, you choose a school: March 7 to 12, March 14 to 19, April 25 to 30 or May 16 to 21, 2027, for $75 to $300 depending on meals and lodging. You must be 18. Arkansas River schools in Colorado ran later in 2026. River Runners started May 18 for about three weeks, with a $300 deposit refunded if you were hired and worked through August 15. Raft Masters ran May 17 to June 5 for $700, reimbursed once a hired trainee completes 90 commercial trips (outfitter pages, accessed Sep 13, 2026).

Fishing guide seasons are short and staffed early. Alaskan Adventures Lodge runs about June 1 to September 15 and requires first aid, CPR and an Alaska guide license. Wilderness Place Lodge had filled its 2026 jobs and was taking 2027 applications in September 2026; it wants boat experience and the ability to get a Coast Guard OUPV license. Alaska Wildland Adventures requires Kenai River guides to be at least 23. In Montana, Spotted Bear Ranch guides from mid-June to early September, and Gallatin River Guides in Big Sky was fully staffed for 2026 and recruiting 2027 summer staff at $16 to $18 an hour (lodge and outfitter pages, accessed Sep 13, 2026).

When do hunting outfitters hire guides?

Before the September archery openers, and often right up to rifle season. These 2026 elk seasons set the deadlines in Montana, Colorado and Wyoming.

Hunt codes and areas can differ, so check your unit. Montana’s backcountry districts 150, 280 and 316 run September 15 to November 29, 2026.

Late openings are common. In mid-September 2026, the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association classifieds carried a rifle elk guide job posted September 10, starting October 18 at up to $300 a day for someone who can pack elk out on horses and mules, and a camp cook job for October 24 to November 24 because the original cook canceled. Diamond 4 Ranch in Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains runs a summer season from mid-June to mid-September and a hunting season from September 15 to October 25, and gives hiring priority to people available for both (accessed Sep 13, 2026). When do dude ranches and park lodges hire?

In winter for summer, and in summer for winter. The Colorado Dude and Guest Ranch Association says its ranches do most summer hiring December through March and collectively hire 800 to 1,000 employees each summer. C Lazy U Ranch accepts summer applications after January 1 and begins phone interviews in February; it hires for its late August to late October fall season starting in July, and for the holidays starting in November. Eatons’ Ranch in Wyoming starts hiring around the first of the year for a June 1 to October 1, 2026 season and tells applicants not to apply unless they can work until at least August 11, 2026 (ranch pages, accessed Sep 13, 2026).

Park lodges run the same calendar at scale. Yellowstone National Park Lodges hires about 3,500 people for a summer season from April to the end of October and about 400 for a winter season from December to early March, according to its CoolWorks profile. CoolWorks says summer employers recruit from October through May or June, busiest January through March, and often hold a second round mid-season. Winter recruiting starts in July or August.

Ski areas hold fall job fairs. Big Bear Mountain Resort in California held one September 19, 2026, advertising pay starting at $19 an hour, and Loon Mountain in New Hampshire holds one October 24, 2026 (resort pages, accessed Sep 13, 2026). When do trail crews and conservation corps hire?

Federal park and forest jobs open in fall and winter, and conservation corps recruit from October through spring. The National Park Service accepts applications for summer positions between October and February and for winter positions between July and August, and posts every seasonal vacancy on USAJOBS. Late openings happen: on February 12, 2026, the Forest Service announced up to 2,000 summer seasonal hires on top of fire hiring.

Montana Conservation Corps’ 2026 crew positions are closed, and it says more 2027 roles open in mid-October and mid-December, with crew member roles typically opening in December. A 2027 crew term runs May to October 2027 and pays a $1,200 biweekly living stipend before taxes plus a $3,697.50 AmeriCorps education award. Members must be 17 to 30, or up to 35 for military veterans. Utah Conservation Corps hires on a rolling basis, positions open until filled, for spring crews (February to May), summer crews (end of May to mid-August) and fall crews (mid-August to mid-November).
