Dude Ranch Jobs: Wrangler, Cook, Housekeeping. Seasons and Pay

Dude ranches are the biggest employer of first-time outdoor workers in the Rockies. A guest ranch with 40 guests runs on 20 to 60 seasonal staff, hires them all at once in winter, and houses and feeds them for the summer. This article lists every position, what each one pays according to the ranches that publish it, when to apply, and what the Dude Ranchers’ Association says gets you hired.

How much do dude ranch jobs pay after housing and meals?

The cash wage looks low because the package is not cash. Sundance Trail Guest Ranch in Colorado pays wranglers and lodge staff $15 an hour for a typical 40-hour week, time and a half beyond that, plus a share of tips, with free dormitory housing, laundry and three meals a day (Sundance Trail Guest Ranch, accessed Sep 12, 2026). Eatons’ Ranch in Wyoming pays a salary by experience plus a share of the gratuity pool, and staff keep individual tips; room and board means three meals a day and housing from private cabins to shared bunkhouses (Eatons’ Ranch, accessed Sep 12, 2026). Drowsy Water Ranch in Colorado pays an hourly wage plus an equal share of ranch gratuities, 40 to 55 hours a week with overtime, and low or no cost housing and food (Drowsy Water Ranch, accessed Sep 12, 2026).

Compare that with rent. A one-bedroom apartment in Bozeman ran $1,840 a month in September 2026, in Jackson $3,120, in Bend $1,695 and in Moab $1,450 (Zumper rent reports, Sep 2026). A staffer earning $15 an hour for 40 hours banks about $2,400 a month gross with nothing taken out for housing or food, plus tips that ranches describe as pooled and shared. Over a four-month season that is $10,000 to $14,000 saved for someone with no experience. When do guest ranches hire?

Early. The Colorado Dude and Guest Ranch Association says its member ranches “typically do most of their hiring for summer employment December-March” and collectively hire 800 to 1,000 employees each summer (Colorado Dude and Guest Ranch Association, accessed Sep 12, 2026). C Lazy U Ranch accepts applications after January 1 and starts phone interviews in February. Eatons’ Ranch begins hiring “around the first of the new year.” Nine Quarter Circle Ranch in Montana starts its process January 1 (ranch employment pages, accessed Sep 12, 2026). CoolWorks, the largest seasonal job board, says January through March is the busiest recruiting window for summer and that employers run a second round in July for mid-August starts to cover attrition (CoolWorks, accessed Sep 12, 2026).

Southwest ranches run the opposite calendar. Rancho de los Caballeros in Arizona listed housekeeping for October 1, 2026 through May 31, 2027, and CoolWorks describes Southwest guest ranches running a long winter season from mid-October to the end of April, recruited from July or August.

What is a wrangler’s day like?

Catch, feed and saddle the string before breakfast, match horses to guests, lead a morning ride and an afternoon ride, teach the arena lesson, doctor a horse, fix a cinch, unsaddle, feed again, and help with the Saturday rodeo or the evening program. Ranches with 200-horse herds like C Lazy U run wranglers in shifts. Paradise Guest Ranch and Nine Quarter Circle both require a riding video with the application, and Nine Quarter Circle wants previous trail guiding experience for wranglers (ranch employment pages, accessed Sep 12, 2026). Most other ranch jobs need no horse experience at all, which the Dude Ranchers’ Association states directly.

What gets you hired?

Availability first. Paradise Guest Ranch prioritizes applicants who can stay the entire season and says anyone unavailable through August 10 is less likely to be hired. Eatons’ requires staff to work at least until August 11. The Montana Dude Ranchers’ Association says ranches base part of every staffing decision on length of availability (ranch and association pages, accessed Sep 12, 2026). Then experience for the role you want; the Dude Ranchers’ Association says “experience will trump eagerness almost every time” and that ranches get hundreds of applications for a handful of positions. Then character: Sundance Trail wants staff who are mature, team-oriented, self-motivated, physically fit and “willing to do whatever it takes,” and Vista Verde asks for hard work, kindness and a clean lifestyle. Nearly every ranch checks references, and several drug test, including for marijuana in states where it is legal.

Do dude ranches hire couples and families?

Couples, often; families, rarely. A cook and a wrangler, or a housekeeper and a maintenance hand, is an easy pair for a ranch to house. Staff housing is dormitory style at most ranches, two to a room, so a couple may get a private cabin while singles share. State it in your application. Which states have the most dude ranches?

The Dude Ranchers’ Association has more than 90 member ranches across 10 western states and one Canadian province, each of which passed a two-year inspection to join (Dude Ranchers’ Association, accessed Sep 12, 2026). Colorado has the largest concentration; its association’s members hire up to a thousand people a summer. Montana’s association lists 16 member ranches.
