A fishing lodge is a small hotel, restaurant, fish plant and boat yard in a place with no town around it, and at the fly-in lodges an airline too. The guides are the visible part of the crew. Behind them are the people who unload the floatplanes, fillet and freeze the guests’ fish, cook three meals a day, turn over the cabins, fly the planes and keep the outboards running.

Who works at a fishing lodge?
Guides, dock and boat crew, fish processors, kitchen staff, housekeepers and servers, pilots and maintenance crew. Kulik Lodge in Katmai National Park lists fishing guides, maintenance, kitchen staff, hospitality workers and airplane and dock support among its seasonal openings. Small lodges blur the lines. Kodiak Wilderness Lodge’s cook also does dishes, vacuuming and linens, Highliner’s hospitality crew may be asked to cut fish or clean boats, and Madison Valley Ranch in Ennis, Montana hires all-around staff who serve breakfast, net fish for guests in the pond and help the housekeepers.
Where are the fishing lodges that hire seasonal staff?
Mostly in Alaska and Montana, going by the lodges hiring in 2026, with smaller clusters on northern lakes and the Gulf coast. The season depends on the water.

Lake of the Woods Tourism says winter is the busiest season on that lake, and its resorts hire fishing guides, dock helpers, housekeeping, chefs, dining help, bartenders and maintenance staff. Montana openings are at Montana jobs.
How much do fishing lodge jobs pay?
From $17.88 to $31.19 an hour in 2026 lower 48 postings, or a monthly salary plus tips in Alaska. Few lodges print a number, so these are the ones that did.

The Montana and Florida jobs come from job orders filed under the H-2B seasonal visa program, which SeasonalJobs.dol.gov lists so U.S. workers can apply; you contact the employer directly. Highliner’s figure is printed without a unit, so ask whether $6,000 is the season or a month. Many lodges print only “competitive monthly salary” or “depends on experience,” as Kodiak Wilderness and Katmai Air did, and Madison Valley Ranch discusses salary in the interview.
Do fishing lodges give you room, board and tips?
Most of the remote Alaska lodges here include room and board; several others charge. Kulik Lodge provides “modern accommodations and meals at no cost,” plus an employee lounge and laundry. Katmai Air gives its King Salmon ground crew food and housing at no cost. Northwoods Lodge includes housing, all meals and round-trip airfare from Anchorage, Riversong Lodge supplies flights to and from the lodge, and Larsen Bay Lodge’s guide posting includes a private room with a shared bathroom, Wi-Fi, laundry and round-trip plane tickets. Shelter Cove Lodge in Craig offered housing at no cost and possible flight reimbursement if you finish the season.
Some lodges charge. Highliner in Pelican deducts $600 a month for room and board. Madison Valley Ranch in Ennis rents single or double rooms in a four-bedroom staff house with a full kitchen and laundry for $175 a month after a $250 refundable deposit. Woodland Resort charges $500 a month for rooms in mobile homes on the property, with Wi-Fi, heat and utilities included. Hennum’s Oak Island Lodge on Lake of the Woods includes room, board and boat or Bombardier transport to and from Baudette or Young’s Bay.
Tips are often pooled across the whole crew. Royal Coachman Lodge in Alaska charges $14,500 a person for a 2027 week, recommends a 10% to 15% tip ($1,450 to $2,175), and splits it evenly among guides, lodge crew, pilots, kitchen and support staff. Montana Fly Fishing Lodge suggests guests leave $100 per guest per day for the staff on top of $150 to $200 a day for the guide, and Madison Valley Ranch builds a staff gratuity into its package price. Kodiak Wilderness Lodge’s cook gets a share of guest tips, and Whaler’s Cove says its fish processing job qualifies for tips. Ask how the pool is divided before you sign.
What do fishing lodges require?
For most jobs: a good work history, references, stamina and the ability to stay the whole season. The specifics vary by job.
- Age. Whaler’s Cove requires fish processors to be over 18, and Highliner requires servers to be 21 to pour alcohol.
- Drug tests. Highliner expects staff to pass a drug test at any time and prohibits all drug use including marijuana. Waterfall Resort drug-tests guides before hiring, and Whaler’s Cove says Coast Guard rules require pre-employment and random testing for its guides.
- Coast Guard license for boat guides. Waterfall requires a six-pack license or higher, Tikchik Narrows requires an OUPV six-pack license, Whaler’s Cove requires an OUPV license and a current or past TWIC card, and Northwoods says the OUPV license is required to guide on Alaska’s waterways and helps its guides get one. Northwoods also requires first aid and CPR.
- Kitchen cards. Highliner asks hospitality staff to have or get food handler and TAP cards.
- Fishing knowledge. Montana Fly Fishing Lodge requires freshwater fly fishing and equipment knowledge, and North 40 Outfitters wants a chef who can talk fly fishing with guests from around the world.
- Pilot credentials. Katmai Air wants a commercial pilot certificate, instrument rating, float rating and second-class medical, with 1,500 hours total and 300 in single-engine seaplanes.
- Comfort with bears. Larsen Bay Lodge tells its fly-out guide applicants there will be brown bears on the rivers.
Plenty of lodge jobs need none of that. Woodland Resort’s ice fishing job requires no experience, and Whaler’s Cove lists fillet experience as preferred, not required. For first aid, captain’s licenses and other credentials, see outdoor job certifications.
When and how should you apply for a fishing lodge job?
Apply in winter for summer and in late summer for winter, then watch for mid-season openings. CoolWorks says January through March is the busiest recruiting window for summer jobs, that some summer employers start as early as October, and that winter employers typically start recruiting in July or August. Woodland Resort posted its December ice fishing job on September 2, 2026, and Hennum’s Oak Island Lodge was taking applications for its 2026–2027 winter season.
Lodges also fill gaps in July and August. Kodiak Wilderness Lodge posted a cook job on June 17, 2026 for an August 1 start, Riversong posted on June 27 to fill the rest of its season, and Shelter Cove posted a housekeeper job on July 22 for a season ending September 5. If you can leave on short notice, check the boards in early summer.
Applications are short and reference-heavy. Kodiak Wilderness asked for a resume, a brief cover letter and two or three references; Madison Valley Ranch asks which positions you want, what you bring, your available dates and three references; Highliner wanted a letter of interest, a resume and two professional references. Lake of the Woods Tourism notes many resort jobs aren’t listed online and suggests calling your favorite resort. Do I need fishing experience to work at a fishing lodge?
Not for most jobs other than guiding. None of the housekeeping, dock or kitchen postings in this article asks for fishing experience except the two Montana jobs: Montana Fly Fishing Lodge’s operations associate and North 40 Outfitters’ chef must know fly fishing. Woodland Resort’s ice fishing job requires no experience at all.
How do I get a job at an Alaska fishing lodge?
Apply in winter for the following summer: CoolWorks says January through March is the busiest recruiting window, and some summer employers start in October. Do Alaska fishing lodges pay for your flight?
Many do. Northwoods covers round-trip airfare from Anchorage, Riversong supplies flights to and from the lodge, and Larsen Bay includes round-trip plane tickets. Shelter Cove offered possible reimbursement if you finish the season. Get the terms in writing, including what happens if you leave early.
Can I work at a fishing lodge in winter?
Yes. Hennum’s Oak Island Lodge on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods runs its winter season from mid-December to late March, Woodland Resort on North Dakota’s Devils Lake starts its ice crew on December 15, and Tarpon Lodge in Florida hires from October through July.
How many hours do lodge staff work?
A lot. Highliner expects 70 to 80 hours a week, Whaler’s Cove’s processors work 6 days a week, and Katmai Air’s ground crew works 6 or 7 days a week. Tikchik Narrows gives all crew a day off each week. The Montana job orders list 40 hours a week and Tarpon Lodge’s 35.
Can couples work at the same fishing lodge?
Often, yes. Lake of the Woods Tourism says many couples work its resorts together, and Woodland Resort on Devils Lake lists family housing. Hennum’s Oak Island Lodge says it will combine part-time roles into one full-time job to fit your skills. Ask about couples housing when you apply.
