Temporary GW-5 smokejumper jobs with the U.S. Wildland Fire Service at the Boise (NIFC) and Fairbanks bases, capped at 1,039 or 1,560 hours in a service year. The work is parachuting into remote, mountainous terrain to fight fire, maintaining saws, pumps and jump gear, and possibly acting as initial attack commander. You must already hold Firefighter Type 1 and have a year of on-the-line crew experience at the GW-4 level, or a related bachelor’s degree. Housing is available but not required in Fairbanks, and travel is heavy during fire season. Direct hire is used, and applications close September 25, 2026 on USAJOBS.
