DNR has two permanent squad boss openings in its Pacific Cascade Region, stationed in either Chehalis or Battle Ground in western Washington. Each leads a squad on a 20-person hand crew or suppression module on initial and extended attack fires, and is available for statewide and interagency dispatch. Outside fire season the work shifts to prescribed fire support, fuels and forest health projects, crew training, drills and equipment upkeep, with occasional help on timber sale layout and recreation projects. An NWCG Firefighter Type 1 qualification is required, along with passing the annual work capacity test. Pay is $3,827 to $5,111 per month. Applications go through the Washington state careers portal and close November 1, 2026.
