Wildland Firefighter (GW-3/4/5) – Engine, Hotshot, Helitack & Handcrew, Multiple Western States

The Interior Department’s U.S. Wildland Fire Service is direct-hiring firefighters at GW-3, GW-4 and GW-5 for engine, hotshot, helitack, handcrew, fuels and wildland fire module crews at more than 80 duty stations, including Elko, Las Vegas and Carson City in Nevada and many sites in Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming and North Dakota. Firefighters build line, lay hose, run pumps, mop up, track weather and fire behavior, and work on prescribed burns and fuels projects in steep, rough terrain, often in heat above 100 degrees. The entry grade (GW-3) needs only six months of general work experience, while GW-5 needs a year of on-the-line or comparable experience. These are permanent career-seasonal jobs with full benefits but not year-round work, so expect some time in non-pay status. Pay is listed as $44,112 to $68,844 a year depending on grade and location.
