Acadia has some of the most heavily built trail in the park system and this job maintains and rebuilds it. The work covers drainage and tread repair, dry stone masonry, and carpentry with heavy logs and rough-sawn lumber, which is the traditional craft end of trail work rather than simple brushing. The incumbent leads and trains labourers and volunteers, operates loaders, ATVs and trucks, and sets up the rigging systems used to move stone and timber into backcountry sites by hand power. Conditions are all-weather and the physical standard is high, with long hikes carrying gear. The appointment is permanent career-seasonal at WG-7, about ten months of work a year running March to December, with a period of non-pay time in winter.
