The Southwest Region is staffing 2027 fire crews across Arizona and New Mexico, including Flagstaff, Prescott, Sedona, Tucson, Williams, Santa Fe, Taos, Ruidoso and Silver City. New hires join an engine, hotshot, helitack or hand crew and spend the season digging line, knocking down burning material, patrolling and caring for tools. The bar is six months of work of any kind that shows you can handle the job, or a matching amount of related study or fire training. Applicants must pass the arduous work capacity test (3 miles, 45 pounds, 45 minutes), plus medical screening, drug tests and E-Verify. Start dates run April 18 to June 13, 2027, and the temporary appointment lasts up to 6 months or a year. Pay is $21.14 an hour at the base rate and varies by location; government housing depends on the station and relocation is not reimbursed. Apply on USAJOBS by 11/12/2026.
