Outdoor jobs in Wisconsin center on fishing guide work, Great Lakes charters, forestry and wildland fire with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and dairy and cattle farm work. The DNR counts more than 15,000 inland lakes, 42,000 miles of perennial streams and rivers, 1,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline and 260 miles of the Mississippi River. More About Outdoor Jobs in Wisconsin
The DNR sets the seasons. For farm work, USDA counted 3.25 million cattle and calves in Wisconsin on January 1, 2026, including 1.285 million milk cows. See farm and ranch jobs in Wisconsin. The rule that matters most: you need a DNR guide license to guide, direct or assist anyone hunting, fishing or trapping for pay. It costs $40 for residents and $100 for nonresidents, whose license covers fishing only, and you must be at least 18. Guiding trout or salmon trolling on Lake Michigan, Lake Superior or Green Bay takes a separate Outlying Water Sport Trolling license plus a Coast Guard operator’s license. For housing, HUD’s fiscal 2026 fair market rent for a one-bedroom in Vilas County is $780.
