Runs Wyoming State Forestry’s exclusive-use helitack program from the permanent helibase at Duncan Ranch near Glenrock. The specialist directly manages the helitack crew and the firefighters providing fast initial attack and large fire support by helicopter, and plans and directs helicopter operations for fire suppression, emergency incidents, natural disasters and resource management projects on state trust land. Duties include managing permanent and temporary helibases, serving as field project inspector on the helicopter service contract, and possibly acting as incident commander or helicopter manager on fires, search and rescue and other emergencies. The role also instructs state helitack and cooperating agency personnel in helicopter and wildland fire subjects and sets crew schedules, priorities, fitness programming and daily staffing. Candidates must pass an arduous-level pack test.
