West Elk Wilderness Outfitters, a horseback hunting and pack-trip outfitter out of Gunnison, hires hunting guides, apprentice guides and wranglers for the season that runs from about the end of August through the end of November. Full guides need prior experience guiding elk and mule deer hunters and must be able to run a hunt with several clients on their own. Apprentices come in with a hunting background, shadow a senior guide, help with horse care and camp work, and can move up to guide after one or more seasons. Wranglers are on from June through November handling tack, horse health and guest rides. Pay, housing and meals are not listed on the page; reach out by email or the site’s contact form.
