The mate navigates the ship, directs fishing on the night watch, keeps the log, and acts as onboard safety officer and fire team leader, and may command the vessel when the master is off. A USCG Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessel license of at least 1,600 GT is required, along with three or more years fishing aboard H&G vessels in Alaskan waters.
