Longline Mate (Bering Sea freezer longliner)

Coastal Villages is looking for a mate on one of its freezer longliners fishing off Alaska and Washington. The mate takes the wheel when the captain is off watch, supervises the deck crew, runs safety drills and training, and handles government reporting, records and USCG oil-transfer procedures. You need a current USCG license with STCW endorsements and your merchant mariner credential, plus either a year as mate on a Bering Sea freezer longliner or three years as mate on another Bering Sea commercial vessel, and at least two years as a deckhand or bosun. Shifts run 12 to 16 hours and sometimes longer, living quarters are cramped, and pay is not listed; 401(k) and health benefits start once you are eligible.
