A front-line seasonal role in the Inland Empire District, reporting to the Long Valley Ranger Station at Mount San Jacinto State Park, which is reached by the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Work is mostly public contact: greeting visitors, answering park questions, collecting fees, checking daily wilderness permits, explaining rules, light housekeeping and phone coverage. Supervision comes from the supervising or duty ranger. Weekend, holiday, evening and early-morning shifts are expected during busy periods, and hours can exceed eight a day in peak season. Employment is capped at 189 days or 1,500 hours in any twelve consecutive months. Conditions swing from over a hundred degrees in summer to freezing in winter, with prolonged standing and walking and occasional lifting to fifty pounds. Aides do not join technical search and rescue.
