Region 5’s 2027 permanent hire for entry-level firefighters, covering more than eighty California duty stations from Eureka and Redding to Bishop, Mammoth Lakes and South Lake Tahoe, plus Glenbrook, Nevada. Crew members serve on engines, hotshot crews, helitack or hand crews and also help with prevention, patrol and prescribed fire. You must be a U.S. citizen, under 37 unless you qualify for a veteran or prior-service waiver, willing to live in remote areas, and able to pass a medical exam, drug screening and the work capacity test. Region 5’s fire hire page confirms the window runs August 24 through September 22, 2026, with interviews in late October and selections through mid-December.
