Smokejumper positions with the Forest Service at the seven jump bases: Redding California, Grangeville and McCall Idaho, Missoula and West Yellowstone Montana, Redmond Oregon, and Winthrop Washington. Jumpers parachute to fires in country too remote or rough for ground access, then work the fire with hand and power tools until it is out or relieved. The announcement notes jumpers may also serve as spotters on the aircraft during deployments and pick up resource management work when they are not on fire assignment. Landings on difficult terrain are part of the job description rather than an exception. These are permanent full-time appointments at GW-5 to GW-6. Government housing and day care may be available at some bases.
