Forest Service smokejumper positions at the Redding, Grangeville, McCall, Missoula, West Yellowstone, Redmond and Winthrop bases. Smokejumpers parachute into remote terrain, including timber and steep slopes, to fight fire with hand tools and chainsaws, and may work as assistant spotter on jumper and paracargo missions; off-season work can include recreation, timber or reforestation. GW-5 needs a year of specialty-crew experience (hotshot, helitack, engine) at the GW-4 level or a related four-year degree, and GW-6 needs a year at GW-5 level, with qualifying examples built around parachute jumping. Government housing may be available and tours guarantee at least 13 full-time pay periods. Applications are due on USAJOBS by September 22, 2026.
