A permanent fisheries technician position with the Fish and Wildlife Service on California’s north coast, with duty stations at Arcata and Yreka. The technician carries out fish and aquatic habitat studies using both active and passive sampling gear, working to understand how fish are distributed and how healthy the habitat is. Day to day that means running GPS units, microscopes and data loggers, collecting and organizing field data, getting it into digital systems, and writing up results. The position also gives work direction to junior technicians and volunteers in the field. It is advertised at GS-5 through GS-7, so it is open to people early in a fisheries career as well as those with a few seasons behind them.
