Deckhand jobs are the entry-level crew positions on working boats: commercial fishing vessels, sportfishing charters, towboats and ferries. You handle lines, clean and maintain the boat, and do what the captain needs. BLS lists deckhand among the titles for sailors and marine oilers, whose 2025 median was $24.77 an hour, or $51,520 a year.
More About Deckhand Jobs
How you are paid depends on the boat. Alaska’s Department of Labor says fishing crew are often paid a share of the catch, with newcomer deckhands earning 1.5 to 10 percent of the adjusted gross, that some boats pay $50 to $100 a day instead, and that minimum wage laws do not apply to crew jobs. Kirby Inland Marine pays entry-level towboat deckhands $221 a day plus benefits, and Washington State Ferries posted on-call deckhands at $28.29 to $34.28 an hour in October 2025. In fishing charter jobs, a 2022 In The Bite article quoted mates at $100 to $150 a trip plus tips of 15 to 20 percent of the charter price. See deckhand pay.
Paperwork comes first. Alaska deckhand jobs on commercial fishing boats require an ADF&G crewmember license, $60 a year for residents and $220 for nonresidents. Kirby wants a TWIC card in hand before you apply, and TSA charges $124 for a new one, valid five years.
Deckhand hiring includes real entry-level jobs. Washington State Ferries calls its on-call deckhand job entry-level, though it requires a TWIC and a Merchant Mariner Credential. Kirby hires at 18 and prefers 12 months of consecutive work experience. Read deckhand jobs, Alaska fishing jobs and fishing charter deckhand jobs.

Usually by crew share. Many boats also charge crew a share of expenses such as food, fuel, bait and ice.
