A seasonal fisheries field technician role with the department’s North Central Region, based out of the Chico Field Office, monitoring adult and juvenile salmon on Butte Creek and the lower Feather River. The data feeds a multi-agency juvenile production estimate for spring-run Chinook salmon in the Sacramento River watershed, including one of the three remaining independent populations in Butte Creek. Aides work all life stages: adult passage monitoring, snorkel surveys of holding adults, carcass surveys, and juvenile trapping with rotary screw traps. Acoustic telemetry and other mark-recapture studies may also be part of the assignment. Duties include fish handling and identification, collecting biological and environmental data, data entry, keeping survey gear working, laboratory tasks, operating boats and vehicles, and towing trailers.
