How do you become a saltwater fishing guide in Florida?
Get a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license first, because FWC requires one before it will sell you a charter captain license. That license lets you work from boat to boat and costs $201.50 for four or fewer customers, $401.50 for 10 or fewer and $801.50 for 11 or more. Do freshwater fishing guides need a license in Florida?
Not a guide license. FWC says surf and freshwater fishing guides and their customers fall under Florida’s regular recreational fishing license rules, and it does not require additional guide licenses. If you carry paying passengers on a boat, the Coast Guard still requires every operator of a for-hire vessel to hold a captain license, also called a Merchant Mariner Credential.

For an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) endorsement on near-coastal waters, federal rules at 46 CFR 11.467 require at least 12 months of experience operating vessels, including at least 3 months on ocean or near-coastal waters.
