Outdoor jobs in Washington center on river fishing guide work, wildland firefighting and conservation corps crews, plus ferry deckhand jobs on Puget Sound. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) counted 470 licensed fishing guides in 2023, 90 percent of them state residents, and the waters with the most guides were the Cowlitz, Hoh and Sol Duc rivers and stretches of the Columbia. Guide trip reports peaked in June, July and September, but the busiest single days on the Hoh, Sol Duc and Bogachiel all fell between January 26 and February 18, 2023, and steelhead were the most frequently encountered species on all three. More About Outdoor Jobs in Washington
The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) seeks hundreds of seasonal firefighters each year to protect 13 million acres, with work generally running May to late September and sometimes April to October. The U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest and Alaska Regions have more than 1,500 fire positions across the national forests of Alaska, Oregon and Washington. For trail and habitat work, the Washington Conservation Corps, run by the Department of Ecology, pays members a living allowance of at least $2,952 a month in its 2026 to 2027 term. Washington State Ferries hires new deckhands throughout the year; see deckhand jobs in Washington. For fire, read how to get a wildland firefighter job.
The rule that matters most is the WDFW guide license. A Food Fish Guide license ($300 for residents, $765 for nonresidents) covers salmon, sturgeon and other food fish in rivers, and a Game Fish Guide license ($375 resident, $760 nonresident) covers game fish such as steelhead. WDFW will not issue either without proof of first aid and CPR certification, a business identifier (UBI) number and at least $300,000 in commercial liability insurance.
