Outdoor Alaska jobs are mostly seasonal: deckhand and seafood processing work, fishing lodge and guide jobs, and wildland firefighting. If you want to work in Alaska with no industry contacts, processing is the usual way in. The state labor department says companies usually hire new workers as processors and promote some of them to deckhand jobs. Most processing workers come from outside the state. In 2024, 94,859 nonresidents worked in Alaska, the highest number since consistent records began in 1990, and about 80 percent of seafood processing workers were nonresidents (Alaska Economic Trends, February 2026). Start with Alaska fishing jobs and our hiring guide.
More About Outdoor Jobs in Alaska
Timing drives Alaska jobs hiring. Fishing crew are hired well before the season, and the salmon and herring boats that make up the largest share of the fleet fish in summer. Trident Seafoods says its many plants and seasons can mean nearly year-round work. Brooks Lodge in Katmai National Park hires fishing guides, hospitality and dock staff for late May through mid-September. The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection posts its crew jobs, including the Pioneer Peak Interagency Hotshot Crew, in December, January and February. More in summer jobs in Alaska.
The license that matters most is the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) commercial crewmember license, which deckhands buy themselves: $60 a year for residents, $220 for nonresidents, or a $30 seven-day license, one per year (2026 prices). Sport fishing guides register with ADF&G for free each year, and deckhands working under a registered guide are exempt. Hunting guides need more: an assistant guide license requires 60 days of legal big game hunting in Alaska over two or more years, 30 of them in a guide camp or under a licensed guide. Questions About Outdoor Jobs in Alaska
How many outdoor jobs in Alaska are open right now?
55 listings are live on WildWork as of October 29, 2026. 26 state their pay and 39 include housing.
What do outdoor jobs in Alaska pay?
The median posted rate is $19.12/hr across 14 current listings that state pay in that unit, with posted rates from $15/hr to $37.10/hr. These are advertised rates; tips, overtime and room and board are extra where the listing says so.
Do outdoor jobs in Alaska come with housing?
71% of current listings say the employer provides housing, free or at a charge, and 55% include meals. Each listing shows whether housing is included and what it costs when the employer says.
What licenses do Alaska fishing and guiding jobs require?
Deckhands need an ADF&G commercial crewmember license, $60 a year for residents or $220 for nonresidents in 2026, and crew members supply their own. Sport fishing guide registration with ADF&G is free and the online application takes 5 to 10 minutes. Big game assistant guides apply to the Big Game Commercial Services Board with a first aid card and a written recommendation from a registered guide-outfitter who intends to employ them, and pay a $200 application fee plus a $310 resident or $620 nonresident license fee.
How do you get to a remote job in Alaska?
Ask the employer how you will get there before you accept, because Alaska’s labor department says each company sets its own transportation policy. Trident Seafoods provides round-trip airfare from Trident-approved hub city airports. Under Alaska law, an employer that pays your way to the worksite must also pay your return fare unless you are discharged for cause, which can include drinking or drug use, long unexcused absences or lying on your application. To be referred through the state job center, you must already be in Alaska.
When should you apply for summer jobs in Alaska?
Apply well before the season begins, because that is when fishing crew are hired. Alaska’s labor department says walking the docks during the season works for only a small percentage of hopefuls, and that the travel and waiting can be costly. Division of Forestry crew jobs post in December, January and February. Lodge seasons are short: Brooks Lodge in Katmai National Park runs from late May through mid-September, occasionally into October.
Who hires wildland firefighters in Alaska?
The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection hires seasonal Wildland Fire and Resource Technicians at seven area offices, including Fairbanks, the Mat-Su Valley and the Kenai Peninsula. Its three crews are open nationwide with preference to Alaska residents, and its Emergency Firefighter program hires on-call firefighters who are at least 18 and have passed training and a fitness test. The division shares firefighters and aircraft with federal agencies, including the BLM Alaska Fire Service. State jobs are posted on Workplace Alaska (workplace.alaska.gov).
